Some sentences : Super Bowl edition

Go, Giants! All in!

First, a little recipe to get you in the mood.
 Big Blue Berry Jello Shots

Prepare Jell-O according to instructions on the box. You know: Boil water. Stir 1 cup of boiling water into Jell-O for a couple of minutes. Then stir in a cup of cold water. (Or, you know, a cup of Stoli Blueberry Vodka instead. )  CHILL. Pour into shot glasses. Ice cube trays. Whatever. Toss in some blueberries. CHILL until set. PUNT.
Blueberry jello shots my prayers been answered!!

So now that you're all loosey-goosey, I thought I'd throw some sentences out there.  Surfer Dude's eldest brother Aidon was -- among other things -- a football hero back on Old Earth before he guided his band of elite refugees to New Mycenae. Now the Lord of the Underworld's memory has been zapped and he's been hidden away to recuperate in Elysium. His competitive edge is the first thing to return.

They race.

I suspect I can beat the fastest of them. I know this, not in my mind with

its stark, blank patches. But in my body, the way one feels the throb of a wound.

Hard muscles knot my legs, like braided cords of line looped over belaying pins. When I bend, my taut belly ripples like cresting waves slapping a jetty. No sooner do those images come to me than they are gone, ghost ships that arrive in mist and vanish into twilight fog.
But as I watch the man-boys run and jump, my heart leaps and burns with fierce competitive fire. I know these things. They are tattooed deep, deep within me, someplace too unfathomable, too ingrained to bleach out.

I don’t recall winning, I don’t recall losing, but I sense I’d be cutthroat and ruthless, relentless as a close-hauled sloop beating course upwind.

Even damaged as I am and toned as they are, these fellows are not in my league and I’m hesitant to approach the track as a contestant. It would be wrong to show them up.

Their perfect bodies fly past me, slick with oil. I watch, fully clothed, a less taxing endeavor than my frustrating attempts to reclaim words, like yardage given up to a penalty call. If they’d toss footballs instead of the flat discs and long spears they hurl, I might join them then, . to be a part of a team, one of eleven, instead of an object of other men’s marvel. Yet, I couldn’t tell you the rules of the gridiron or even what a football looks like. Or why I'm so certain I’d succeed.

If I try to capture thoughts, pain sears me. Answers are beyond my grasp. Except my certainty that once I was a substantially different man. A man whose strength, even under the best of circumstances, was action not words.

A man who flew.

The cinder track encircles the field like the garter on a bride’s thigh. An image of the woman’s thighs suddenly pops unbidden into the desolate expanse in my head. Sweet silk. Interstate to the pleasure casino.
         Gone.
My gaze returns to the track. When the athletes quit the course, I move toward the ring of cinders and stand on the chalk streak that divides the lanes. The dusky light of late afternoon grays the sky. The tang of pomegranates tarts the air. I am alone save the trees in a nearby orchard, thick with red fruit, and the cows lowing softly in the pasture beyond. There is no one to see me.

I drop to a knee and touch the ground. Dust paints my fingertips as I sift the cinders through my hands. Familiar but unfamiliar, my worsted and wingtips jarring in this place where naked bodies run.

Hands planted on either side of me, knees bent, forward leg raised to my chest, rear leg lightly grazing the track. My cordovaned toes are poised, heels reaching for something that isn’t there. My center of gravity shifts forward as I lift my hips and balance in a tight, fixed zone, ready to spring. A phantom report echoes in my ears. Exploding from my crouch, I run.

Faster and faster. Faster still.

My heart thunders as if it might burst from my chest, Chuck Yeager at Mach 1, whipping past sound in Glamorous Glennis, Pete Knight booming through the barrier at Mach 6.7 in an X-15.

But I cannot escape myself or the prison of my mind. Or the tangled ball of survivor’s guilt that grows within me like the rolled yarn of an unraveling scarf bridging all the worlds I inhabit. I bend over, drawing great, ragged gasps of air into raw lungs.

The athletes meandered back to watch my performance and now they cluster at the edge of the field, gaping at me in slack-jawed silence. I’ve covered the distance between us in the time it takes a rocket to leave the earth.

But once, I think, I was able to do better.

Six Sentence Sunday 11-27-11

Aidon throws a dinner party for two uninvited live dudes who have sneaked into his subterranean realm to court his new bride. Not only is he serving them underworld food, but he's got another surprise in store. Wasn’t your Thanksgiving table just like this?

“What are you going to do to them, Aidon?”

Stephanie nods toward the pair of weeping dingbats.
Percy munches a flaky biscuit, the waterworks running all the while, unware that the more he eats, the more uncontrollable his tears. Theo slurps a delicate lemon-asparagus soup and tries to pull his seat closer to the table, unconscious of the chamois-covered manacles clamped around his calves, or that the only direction he's moving is down. The polished floor tile beneath the suitors’ chairs recesses again, lowering them another inch or so on their way to Tartarus.
“What do you want me to do, Steph?”

Six Sentence Sunday 11-20-11

An idea for Cloud Boy's story (he's Surfer Dude's baby brother) has arrived like Athena bursting forth from Zeus's brow. So in honor of that plot bunny, here's six from the story of their big brother Aidon, The Reaper, and hero of my heart.  (One day, Aidon, I will find you a worthy home.)

“Listen, you big lug,” I murmur, gasping for air when his lips release mine.  “You’ve brought me Below, turned my whole world upside down – and  I haven’t done anything to you.”

My world isn’t exactly spinning normally on its axis, Stef.”

"But I --" The Big Guy's stunning admission shakes me to the core. "Really?"

Six Sentence Sunday 4/10/11

More from Mia and Surfer Dude's untitled story, the second in a series of futuristic WIPs set on the planet of New Mycenae, where Pierce and his two brothers lord it over everyone.

By way of explanation: Pierce is Surfer Dude, Lord of the Deep. His youngest brother is Zack,  also known as Cloud Boy, who holds sway over everything above the planet's crust. Their eldest brother is Aidon, The Reaper, Lord of the Underworld, hero of the Book of My Heart.

Last week we met Mia. Although Surfer Dude appears in the ms before Mia does, this is his first scene after she makes her midnight escape, leaving her dive fin behind.

Pierce scanned the dark water of Quadrant Five until his cramping muscles forced him to rest. He stopped swimming and floated within the transparent membrane of the Air Surround bubble, debating whether to surface or return to the compound to mute The Sirens' alarms. He’d already switched out and depleted three oxygenated bubbles without finding any sign of the intruder that had set the girls off tonight.

Should he discuss the coral issue with his brothers? Water World didn't interest Cloud Boy, who wasn't doing much to curb the black market trade. But Aidon might help: nothing got by The Reaper.

Six Sentence Sunday 11-07-10

A few weeks ago, I offered a glimpse from Aidon's POV.  Here's Stephanie's. From my currently-being-revised WIP, Pomegranate Seeds.

This guy puts his brothers--none of them slouches in the hot hunk department--in the shade. Even unconscious, his power beams off him with the force of a gazillion giga-watts, like the energy generated by an exploding sun. My fingers itch to stroke through this unbelievable stud muffin's thatch of midnight hair, to rip the linen shirt off his thick, muscular shoulders and wander across his toned six-pack--despite the broken arrow shaft jutting from his chest.
He murmurs something in a voice that throbs through me, ramping up my excitement, his hard, sensual mouth curving in a smile so sexy I wonder if my knees will actually buckle, if I'll actually fall on top of him. I know he's doped up with lust-poison but the idea of us tangled together in an ecstatic fever of sweaty limbs makes my pulse speed up as if I'm the one who took Coop's arrow in the heart.
        I am such a goner.

Six Sentence Sunday: 10-17-2010

I'm returning to Pomegranate Seeds, my paranormal WIP, and playing with the beginning. There are parts of this story I love more than anything else I've ever written. But I know I need to get to Steph sooner. So, much as I love that the first time we see her is the first time Aidon sees her,  I'm slashing and burning and writing her a new little B.A. (Before Aidon) part, around page 3 or so. But I'm keeping the meet. And, at least for now, the first person, present tense narrative.
So here's Aidon, one of my favorite heroes ever, felled, flat on his ass, gazing up at Steph, awash in love juice and baffled and befuddled. (Well, maybe not totally.)

(Ten sentences smashed into six for Six Sentence Sunday. You can probably tell where they were soldered together. Or where overly creative punctuation was employed. Won't stay that way!)

Testosterone sloshes through me and passions of every stripe, formerly without power, inflame me. Emotions I’d thought long dead and buried erupt like a fireworks display and I’m ready to leap up, naked, wounded, unarmed but belligerent, screaming for satisfaction. War, sex. My id’s in masculine overdrive; my inner hound howls.
      I need to have her.
     Now.
