Pierce massaged the pebbled QWERTY tattooed on his forehead by the keyboard. He appreciated the Sirens’ thematic unity, but their off-the-charts decibel level tonight could deafen a dolphin.
Here's how you play: Pick two sentences from a book you're reading, and two from a book you're writing. (I'm declining to do the first part of that equation today, because I just read a sentence in a book that's consuming me, by an author I love, that was so clunky and awkward I couldn't believe what I was seeing!)

Oh, I hate when I read a clunky sentence by an author I love! It's so distressing. Of course, the flip side of that is that it gives me hope that if even THEY can write clunkers, I might some day be able to write well!
And having, said that, I just realized my own sentence is so clunky I made it sound as if Pierce had a keyboard in his forehead. Changing that now! At least I didn't have as many filter words, POV problems and non-agreement of subject and verb as FAMOUS AUTHOR did!

I find I'm a different type of reader now that I'm a writer. I also find myself picking out sentences and phrases from my favorite authors' work and thinking of how I would writer them differently (ie. better).
I'm not. I'm essentially a reader at heart. I think I always will be. If there's something that glares out at me, it's really bad.
