Looking back...and forward

Buh-bye, 2013.
All things considered, not a bad year for me, writing wise.
So let's reflect...

2013 saw the publication by Decadent Publishing of two  of my 1Night Stand stories, FROST and HEAT WAVE, and of BLIZZARD,  a story for Decadent's The Edge line. All of those, along with two 2012 1Night Stand stories, LIGHTNING and THUNDER, were collected in the SLEEPY HOLLOW anthology which came out in late August, as a digital edition and as a paperback!

Not too shabby.

What will 2014 bring?  I've committed to writing three books for some new lines. One of those is in the can, written and submitted and I'm waiting to hear back from Decadent on whether it's been accepted. I've begun another, for a different publisher and a different secret new line, but the deadline's not until the summer so I'm playing around and procrastinating. The third project is barely a glimmer in my eye. Sadly, it doesn't seem that any of those will be published in 2014. So it may be a slow and depressing year for me, while waiting for those calendar pages to flip by.

And trying to curb my book envy when peeps I know announce new contracts and show off dazzling new covers.

But in May, I'll be visiting New Orleans (my bucket list city) for the Romantic Times con.

Which brings me to my game plan for 2014. (Notice how I didn't say "resolution" there? I'm funny that way. I also know myself.)

In 2014, I hope to plan better. And not make myself too crazy doing it!  How about you?

                                            Happy New Year!

My Sexy Saturday 7-6-13

A little BLIZZARD heat this Saturday.

The man removed his parka, revealing a plaid flannel shirt, the triangle of a white, cold-weather T-shirt peeping from the open neckline. When he raised his arms, thick bands of muscle rippled across his chest, beneath the layers of fabric. He riveted her with brilliant azure eyes, bluer than a lake under the summer’s sun. His hair, which curled a bit boyishly at his temples, resembled a wet beach, light, dirty brown, with shimmering bronze threads straggling through the locks. But this was no boy. No, indeed.

God. Gorgeous did not even begin to cover it.

Sunday Sizzle 3-17-13

Some hot stuff from BLIZZARD:

“Nevertheless. Talk is what we’re doing.” He leaned down and stroked a finger across her hot cheek. “First.”

He left his parka on the banquette across the table from her and strode off to one of the food vendors. She watched him go, admiring his easy gait, the confident way he carried himself, the spare, sinuous play of ass and thigh muscles inside his tight jeans. Broad, masculine shoulders. Long, long legs. Ending in sturdy Timberlands. Easily six-four. About 220 pounds of prime male beef. More fantasies bombarded her. She wanted his weight on top of her, her legs wrapped around his lean hips, the jeans down around his ankles, his cock driving into her, making her scream in passionate release. Boots optional. On or off, she didn’t care. As long as his fly was open.

They were going to do it. She would wrap her needy body around this man. Once she stopped shaking and got her conscience and libido in control. In her head it was already a done deal. They were going to screw like bunnies. And then screw some more.

Sizzling Sunday 2-24-13

From BLIZZARD, just released from Decadent Publishing's The Edge, erotica line.  From where last Sunday's post left off:

"Do you…do you get these kinds of offers a lot?"

"Nope." He dipped a couple more fries into a paper cup of ketchup and crammed them into his piehole along with the rest. She watched his jaw work. Square. Hard. Solid. An utterly masculine jawline. His lips were firm and she wanted to feel them on hers. Feel them everywhere. "So it’s not like I’m gonna pass up an opportunity."

Her heart raced. He was going to give her what she wanted. What she so desperately craved.

BLIZZARD!

BLIZZARD is here!

BUY:Decadent | Amazon | Barnes&Noble | All Romance | Smashwords | CoffeeTime

BLURB:

Mandy Malone ditches her pharmaceutical convention and the married male colleagues hitting on her to hurry home to her waiting family. But she doesn’t bank on the blizzard that forces her off the road and into a deserted rest stop. When she meets another road refugee, their attraction is immediate and molten hot. Suddenly, getting stranded doesn’t seem like such bad luck after all.

Although totally unprepared for Mandy’s unvarnished proposition, Jack is intrigued by the erotic offer of a promising night of no-questions-asked sex. But when he notices the wedding band on Mandy’s finger, will he forego the lure of a torrid clandestine affair, or give in to the fantasy of blazing hot sex on a wintry night?

EXCERPT:

She rooted around in her handbag again, on the off chance she’d missed something useful to her current situation.

“Is this what you’re looking for, lady?”

Mandy glanced up, startled by the deep, rumbling baritone that echoed loudly in the fairly quiet building. And even more startled by the tall, gorgeous hunk of manhood bundled into a down parka standing next to her table.

I could totally jump him. Right here. Right now.

From nowhere, steamy erotic images of what she wanted to do with the man leaped unbidden into her head. She’d never felt such instant attraction to anyone, such a frantic desire. Maybe it was a reaction to her frightening experience on the Thruway. Or maybe something else created the overpowering chemistry.

Besides being the most handsome man she’d ever laid eyes on, he held out a battery-operated pocket charger. A sigh escaped her as he stared down at her.

“It’s not the only thing I’m looking for.” Her voice, husky and sultry, and laden with blatant sexual innuendo, shocked her. Where had those words come from? Nearly alone with him in the deserted rest stop…and still she felt…safe.

“Yeah?” The man removed his parka, revealing a plaid flannel shirt, the triangle of a white, cold-weather T-shirt peeping from the open neckline.

The longer he looked at her, the hotter she became. So hot she suddenly felt she’d do anything, dare anything with this man.

Bits of BLIZZARD

BLIZZARD's official release date is Friday! (Which means that, very possibly, you will be able to find it on Thursday at some vendors.)

Check out the Countdown Clock in the sidebar on the right. Fun, isn't it? (Okay, tacky. But still.)

Here are a few sentences from BLIZZARD while we wait:

Just the sight of the guy had her aroused. She wanted to do bad things with him. Bad, bad things. Her excitement increased.

"What else are you looking for?" His low, almost harsh growl kicked up her temperature a few more notches. The sexy, gravelly timbre of his voice resonated through her. One of his eyebrows lifted. No question, he’d caught her invitation, recognized it for what it was.

Did he really need her to say it out loud?

"Looking for you," she murmured.

Some Sentences from BLIZZARD 2-17-13

BLIZZARD releases this week! So excited, not only because I love the story, but it's also a little departure for me:  a very short, very HOT story for Decadent Publishing's The Edge line of erotica stories.  A contemporary, with no paranormal elements.

It's not really part of my Sleepy Hollow paranormal series of 1Night Stands. Although it is kind of a fantasy one-night stand and there is a mention of Sleepy Hollow.

Here are  few PG-13 sentences:

He chewed his cheeseburger, as if completely absorbed by it.

Men.

She’d just poured out her heart to this guy, told him how sex-deprived and ready she was to screw his brains out, and his attention remained riveted on the food.

He inhaled his burger in two more swallows and went to work on the fries. Methodically. As if propositions for unbridled, no-questions-asked, no-strings-attached sex bombarded him every day.

A guy so ruggedly gorgeous…maybe they did.

                                                              YYY

BLIZZARD is scheduled to release Friday. (Which means you can probably find it Thursday!) Look for it later this week at my Amazon Author Page, my Decadent Publishing Page, Barnes & Noble Author Page, or wherever ebooks are sold!

BLIZZARD (sneak peek)

So...the weather being what it  is here in the lovely Northeast, and my office having closed early (a rarity)...I decided it was the perfect day to offer an unofficial sneak peek of BLIZZARD, releasing from Decadent Publishing's The Edge erotica line on February 22, 2012.  This one sizzles, but it's also romantic and has a sweet HEA.

Unofficial BLIZZARD excerpt:

The snow, which had started out first as a minor misty drizzling, then morphed into a light dusting of a few scattered flakes, now fell in earnest. Gazillions of thick, fat clots merged together and covered the New York State Thruway faster than the sand trucks and salt spreaders cleared the accumulation. Sloshy gobs of whiteness covered the windshield, turning into thick bricks too heavy for even the Volvo’s mad wipers to deal with.

Mandy cursed her pigheadedness. She never should have left the upstate conference center that afternoon. But she’d been desperate to get away from the pharmaceutical convention. The business meetings with her colleagues had made her temples throb and her neck stiff, physical symptoms blossoming into the raw edges of a migraine that the brightness of the snow did nothing to mitigate. But her gorge had risen when the gaggles of salesman tried to hit on her in bars and hallways, until the idea of spending another second in their company made her bolt. They were all married, like her. But away from home, they figured they’d play.

She wanted to play, too. God, knew she did. But not with any of them. Maybe she longed for sex right now, even a desperate hook-up. It had been a long time since she’d last gotten down and dirty. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d had sex with her husband. But no way would she give any of those pathetic pitch guys at the convention a tumble.

That last telephone conversation with her husband had left her agitated and her stomach in knots from an urgent need to get home and see him. To talk face to face. These days, their hectic schedules left so little time, they communicated mainly by text message and Post-It note.

So yeah, she’d ditched the rest of the convention a day early. She couldn’t bear to stay upstate for another night of unwelcome groping and tired pick-up lines, of drunken colleagues who’d be mortified later when she ran into them sober. All she’d wanted was to get out of that claustrophobia-inducing conference center in upstate New York and return to her home in Sleepy Hollow for the remainder of the long weekend—or perhaps because of— the gloomy weather forecast.

The mild gray sky had not appeared threatening when she’d left; no precip yet falling at that time. And for pity’s sake, she drove a Volvo at her husband’s insistence. Traffic willing and all other things being equal, she might be home in under two hours.

But the weather refused to cooperate. Visibility was nil. She couldn’t follow in the tracks of the car in front of her; or even see the taillights of any cars in front of her anymore. Or anything else except stark, blank stretches of white.

Mandy, girl. You’ve had some bad ideas in your time, but this one tops the hit parade. Better get home in one piece or hubs will whack you.

Terror time. The image of her husband loomed large in her mind. She could no longer concentrate. Inside her gloves, her hands began to sweat. As beads of perspiration sprouted on her brow, she lowered the heat in the car a notch. All alone in winter world and with her stomach clenching in fear, she tightened her fingers on the steering wheel and decelerated. Her right foot rode the brake until the car’s speedometer dipped below 5 mph and didn’t even register a speed. The car slid suddenly, skidding into a wide arc that nearly landed her in a large drift on the shoulder. Her heart pounded and the death grip she had on the wheel made her fingers cramp.

She had to get off the road. Now.

But where?

Huge mounds of snow from the last storm had been plowed into high banks on the shoulders, glistening like glaciers, leaving no room for a vehicle to pull over. The steady click and scrape of the wiper blades over the iced windshield mocked her.

Please, please, please. She begged and bargained, promising she’d never do something so stupid again. But she knew herself. She’d always been something of a risk taker. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Even if her husband did force her drive a Volvo, for his peace of mind, not hers. Always a bone of contention between them. Although, with the hand of fear squeezing her innards until her heart sat in her mouth, she conceded he might have a point.

Finally, up ahead, pinpricks of light winked through the darkening night and the frosted windshield, proclaiming a Thruway rest stop.

At last.

She guided the car into what she believed to be the parking lot—or the white-blanketed area where she thought a parking lot should be. The gas pumps stood forlorn, like lumpy statuary. Few other cars or trucks dotted the area.

But still. Even if she had to dig in for awhile and the car got buried, she’d manage to find the Volvo in the vast expanse of white through the car’s magnificent GPS system. Or the spring thaw. Whichever came first. Meanwhile, she needed a hot cup of coffee to settle her nerves. Maybe some homemade fudge. Or doughnuts. A dozen or so. A sugar glut. That’s what she needed.

Finding sanctuary at last, among the fast food court, unlimited calories and carbs, and souvenir shops. Nearly all the tables inside the cavernous structure stood vacant. She unwound her scarf, peeled off her gloves and stuffed them in the pockets of her damp coat, then removed that as well, dumping it beside her in one of the empty plastic booths. Still trembling with relief at being off the horrible road at last, she put her head in her hands and took a few calming breaths before scavenging in her bag for her Smartphone. The tiny, blank screen taunted her. No bars. No battery. No email No nothing. She’d packed the charger in her suitcase and hadn’t thought to connect the device to the Volvo’s USB port.

Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.

Once again, she pictured her husband’s face. Frowning. She imagined his lecture on the necessity of being prepared, instead of larking off on the spontaneous adventures so dear to her. Not that he was a stick-in-the-mud or anything. Far from it. But their personalities were completely different when it came to stuff like this. Grudgingly, she admitted that Volvo Man saw more horrifying disasters working with FEMA than she ever would. Merely getting stuck in the snow in a rest stop filled with food and electricity and heat probably didn’t qualify as an emergency, let alone a catastrophe.

Right here. Right now.

Jessica Subject

My super guest blogger today is the amazing and prolific Jessica Subject, one of my fellow Decadent Publishing authors and Six Sentence Sunday pals. Please give her a hearty welcome!

Today, Jess discusses how she comes up with the names for all those folks running around in the writer's brain! And, she's giving away great swag to celebrate the publication of CRASH LANDING, her newest sci-fi erotica release from The Edge, Decadent Publishing's HOT erotica line.

Naming Characters

Depending on the story I’m writing, naming the characters involved can take some work.

For my heroes, I tend to prefer single syllable names, or nicknames. Some examples from my stories include, Frey, Josh, Bryce, Dare, and Quinn. For the heroine’s name, it really is dependent upon the story, and can range from one to three syllables.

Often I will search for a name in my Dictionary of Baby Names, which gives the meaning, derivations, and origins. I’ve also gone online to check the numerous lists of baby names depending on time period and origin.

One of my worst habits when naming characters is using the same first letter over and over. My favorite letters to begin characters’ names are: B, J, and L. I purposely use the dictionary to look under different letters now.

For Crash Landing though, I used Google Translate. Why? Because I wanted very specific names. Latin is now considered a dead language, but it is still used in the formation of new words in the modern language. In this case though, I was looking for exact translations. One characters comes from space, so I looked for the Latin translation of space. The latin noun cael means heaven, sky, universe, world, space, air. So my first character was named Cael. The second character, although also from space, lived in the water. And so he became Mare (sea, water, briny, aqua, brine). The female character is from Earth, and although not an exact translation, I named her Tara.

So, how about you? Do you think character names are important in a story?

Here’s an excerpt from the beginning of the Crash Landing:

Cael gripped the cushioned arms of the captain’s chair as his ship tumbled bow over stern. The console flashed a blinding red in front of him. Piercing alarms drilled into his mind and he lost focus. The seconds raced by as he plummeted toward Earth. He’d fucked up this mission of peace. Contact with his home planet had ended months ago. No one from Narien could save him now. His death was imminent.

The water below wouldn’t soften his landing. At its current speed, his ship would disintegrate on splashdown. The planet’s gravity pulled him down faster.

He coughed; the acrid scent of fried electronics stung his nose and the back of his throat. Please let my death be quick.

A rattling to the left caught his attention above all other noise. The handle on the cabin door shook. Freedom. It wasn’t his time to die, if he could get out.

The altimeter on the dashboard read six thousand meters, high enough to jump and land safely with his chute. Only to land in frigid water and die of exhaustion or hypothermia from treading without any hope of a rescue.

“Shit.” But he’d die if he stayed. He had to take the chance. Yanking off his safety harness, he pulled himself to standing and strained to reach the recess where his pack hung. Stretching up, he fingered the cloth strap. Not close enough to grab hold of it.

The ship jolted and flung him to the stern. He weaved his arm through the straps of the pack on his way past, dislodging it from the hook. Yes.

His triumph was short-lived as he flew starboard, smashing his shoulder against the wall. He groaned when an electrifying spasm shot down his arm to the tips of his fingers. The ship lurched again, and he tumbled back toward the console. He grabbed the door, his feet dangling in mid air. If he didn’t get out now, he’d forfeit any chance to survive.

The ship righted again. He planted his feet against the bottom of the door and twisted the crank. The latch snapped open, filling him with a sense of hope. Careful to keep at least one hand on the handle at all times, he slung the pack over his shoulders.

All set. Time to jump. Pushing off the floor, he slammed his uninjured shoulder against the door. It blew open and tore away from its hinges, lost to the sky.

Cael teetered on the edge before plunging out of his failing ship. Wind whipped all around him as he twisted to catch his bearing during freefall.

Glancing down, he spied crystal blue lake, much closer than he’d expected. Too close.

He jerked the cord on his chute–several hundred feet lower than he should have. At least. His feet skimmed the cold waves just as his chute caught the current and heaved him back into the air.

The ship splashed into the water beside him, disintegrating into millions of pieces. He raised his hands in front of his face as shrapnel flew at him. Tiny shards sliced into his arms and legs, but the extreme heat from the cloud of steam billowing up at him stung the most.

From the moment his toes touched down in the once frigid water, his skin sizzled. He screamed in agony. His death would have been quicker and less agonizing if he’d remained in the ship.

A hard piece of his spacecraft smashed down on his head, and he welcomed the darkness.

Crash Landing Blurb

As his ship plummets toward Earth, Cael believes his life to be over. His last ditch effort to save himself ends in a fiery crash. When he wakes up, he believes he’s entered the afterlife, but his surroundings indicate otherwise. He made it to Earth. But who saved him, and what do they want with him?
