Six Sentence Sunday 5/1/11

So...in honor of all things nuptial (just in case you have not had quite enough of weddings and British nobility)...here's another.

It's a continuation from my March 6 Six Sentence Sunday snippet from one of my gazillion WIPs, Lilacs of Dawn

You may remember (well, of course you don't, that's why I've handily provided the date!) very briefly meeting Marc Antony Warren, Viscount Webb (who has a great deal in common with Healing Heart's Adam, actually), who was on a secret mission in France the night before his wedding. As he's shot, he falls unconscious to the ground, clutching his bride-to-be's garter.

Some of you guessed he'd make it to the wedding the next morning. Some of you guessed right. More or less.

Sabrina's fingers bit into Chase's forearm, her legs turning to water as she gazed down the flower-strewn aisle and saw her tall, handsome, impossible bridegroom standing at the altar with his brother, magnificent in his wedding clothes.

Her foreboding returned full blast as she noted the odd pallor washing the color from Webb's grim face, his awkward, unnaturally stiff posture.

He does not want to be here.

"He loves you, Sabrina," Chase whispered, as if guessing her thoughts.

But Webb did not resemble a man in love or a bridegroom eager to be wed.

He looked. . . foxed!

Oops. Not a good way to begin a marriage. Hope he can remember his lines. Great six, Taryn!

Vivien Jackson said...

Well, I'm sure she doesn't look completely comfortable either! I hope they hash this out right away. Ugh: wedding days are so stressful. Nice tension in the scene!

Or stoned on ladium. Love this view from her eyes, questioning how he truly feels about her. Shows nicely things are not always as they appear.
Well done.

Uh-oh! That does not sound good. I wonder who will run away first. Great six!

sounds like trouble's a-brewing :-) Nice job!

I wonder if he makes it through the ceremony without passing out. Great six!

When does she find out he was shot? And does he make it through the wedding night without passing out? Her trepedations are well done and warrented. Great six!

Love this! I know sometimes misunderstandings get a bad rap but I eat them up.

Cate Masters said...

Excellent tension! Looking forward to seeing how this works out.

I like the snippet overall, but one suggestion: "full blast" struck me as anachronistic. I don't know the origin of the phrase but it did jar me.

NOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo Sometimes, six sunday is just so frustrating. I really got caught in that, what happens next? Does he love her? Does he go through with it? Does she go through with it? Arghhhhhhh You tease, you! Foxed, love that expression. Fab six, as always!

Rebecca Royce said...

AHHHH. I love how you led up to that!

Sarah Grimm said...

Great six! Does he make it through the ceremony without passing out? Love that she is questioning his love

Taryn Kincaid said...

You may be right, Linda. I think "full blast" was around, but it does sound like more modern rocketry or something. Maybe I'll go with "full tilt" and conjur up knights in the list instead!

Great snippet!!

Jayel Kaye said...

What ever "foxed" means, I certainly hope it doesn't mean zombie

Taryn Kincaid said...

Regency slang for "drunk."

Taryn Kincaid said...

(Although "zombie" might put an interesting twist on things! LOL!)

Laura Kaye said...

Great set-up, and so awkward and painful and heartwrenching--great conflict!

faxed ?? superb description!

Taryn Kincaid said...

Foxed, people. It's "foxed."
F-O-X-E-D.

It essentially means: drunk as a lord (if not a skunk)

Zee Monodee said...

Lol, foxed indeed! Perfect example of how women and men interpret things differently. :)

Lindsay said...

Great snippet and the only way you'd ever get me caught in the parson's mousetrap was if I was beyond fox.

J.A. Beard said...

I love the contrast between the reality and what she's perceiving.

RE: Regency slang

Oddly enough, I once had a crit partner get confused because I used "lost in his cups at an inn." I thought that one would be pretty straight forward. Granted, I cut my teeth with Georgette Heyer and she likes to toss around the slang pretty thick.

Hailey Edwards said...

Aww. Poor bride. I'd wonder what he'd been up all night doing to get that way...or maybe she doesn't want to know. lol

Lisa Fox said...

Not only did I read a great snippet, but I learned a whole new word. Foxed. I like it.

Taryn Kincaid said...

Heh. I figgered you might!

Susanna Fraser said...

Poor bride and groom! What a rough way to start out.

Anonymous said...

She bit into his forearm? Yikes! A seriously anxious bride! Nice set up!

Jessica Knauss said...

Foxed, huh? With the description, I can see "zombie" working quite well. Poor girl. Great tension.

J said...

Oh Gads...I hope she doesn't like turn and run when he's just been shot!! ::chewing nails:: hurry up, next Sunday!!

lexcade said...

Oh wow! This is getting even more interesting... Drunken groom always spices things up.

Lindsay said...

If he isn't in his cups then maybe he should be.

Catch My Words said...

A groom who doesn't look like he wants to be at his own wedding. That's discouraging.

Poor Sabrina! Not the way to start a marriage.
:( Hope things get better!

Jenna McCormick said...

Oh, I can feel her apprehension like waves. Great six!

Sandy Nachlinger said...

WOW! Talk about conflict! Poor Sabrina. The last thing she wants to see is an unenthusiastic bridegroom. Can't wait to hear what happens next and if the wedding actually happens.

Stacey Kennedy said...

Oooo...I sense trouble! I wanna know what kind of trouble! Sooo good!! :)

Janet Lane Walters said...

Always did like Webb

Taryn Kincaid said...

Well, you know me. I LOVE Webb. Always have. Always will. (Even if Adam momentarily supplanted him in my affections.)

Liz said...

hopefully it was on a decent ale from the publican....nice work!

Verna Clay said...

This is a great six. I want more! You got me hooked. Loved the "foxed" part.

Heather Thurmeier said...

Uh-oh. Will she walk the aisle or run for the hills. Don't leave us hanging for another two months before letting us find out what happens next.

Roseanne Dowell said...

What a great six. I agree with Heather, don't leave us hanging.

Joanne Stewart said...

I agree...that's a terrible place to stop! ;) seriously, great six!

Monica Enderle Pierce said...

Her perception vs. reality is wonderful. And I love his dedication. Nice!

Lisa Kumar said...

We know why he looks so foxed and uncomfortable! What will her reaction be when she finds out? :)

Lindsay said...

Just pray she doesn't shoot him herself

Lynne Murray said...

Poor guy, bullet wound and blood loss notwithstanding he makes it to the altar and gets misunderstood--suspenseful six!

Liana Brooks said...

This is why communication is key. Will leaned over and told his bride-to-be she was beautiful, this gentleman might try the same approach.

Beautiful picture, wonderful writing. :o)

Anonymous said...

Makes me want to know more.

Unknown said...

I definitely want to know more. The foxed is a great hook.

AllureVanSanz said...

LOL. Loved this, Taryn. Can't wait to read it.

All my best,
Allure

Jean Davis said...

Love her misinterpetation of his appearence and I wonder what her reaction will be when and if she finds out the truth. Great six!

Anonymous said...

Maybe it's just terror? ;)

Roberta Walker said...

Oh, he does love her! Even a bullet can't stop him! Sweet.

Pip Green said...

Oh, I hope they both manage to resolve this - the guy got shot and still got to the church on time!

Lindsay said...

At least he's in the right place. Married and buried all at once

D Carney said...

Yikes! Dude...that's not cool at all. LOL

I love historical s...this sounds like the trouble is only beginning. Great six, Taryn!
